Black Onion Seeds (also known as Nigella) are not from onions. They actually come from a member of the buttercup family with blue or white flowers, these develop spiky-looking seed capsules which hold the seeds.

Nigella seeds, also known as kalwanjee (kalonji) have little aroma, but a nutty, earthy and peppery taste with a crunchy texture.
